I fell in love with Tori Amos with 1994’s ‘Cornflake Girl’. I loved the drama and intensity of her music. ‘Professional Widow’ in 1996 solidified her as a mixtape favourite. Now, Ocean To Ocean reminds me why I admired her in the first place.
Its title sets the scene, a strong nature theme runs through songs like ‘Speaking With Trees’, ‘Metal Water Wood’ and ‘Flowers Burn to Gold’. Tori wrote the album in Cornwall during the UK’s long winter lockdown, so you might think it would be a dark and sober, but Ocean To Ocean is refreshingly bright.
Cornwall is known for its beautiful beaches, sheer cliffs and steep valleys; Ocean To Ocean captures that through Tori’s unique vocals, the theatre of her music, and her whimsical charm. Strings, haunting piano and the quiver in Tori’s voice brings the landscape to life. – Wendy Saunders
