‘Wild Horse Nine’ Review: John Malkovich Is Glorious in Martin McDonagh’s Dull Spy Comedy

John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell are funny American spies who bring horror and fascism to Chile in Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine.

www.thewrap.com www.thewrap.com

“Wild Horse Nine” is neither endearing nor twisted enough to work. McDonagh doesn’t make these dangerous men lovable, he assumes they’re already lovable and works backwards. He’s not particularly angry about America’s insidious meddling in international politics, even though his script directly addresses the horrors this country hath wrought, so the political commentary is hollow. Our sins are nothing more than a justification for our melancholy. They’re not our responsibility. It’s a dour mentality that makes even “Wild Horse Nine’s” funniest jokes, and there are a few, hard to laugh at.

Wild Horse Nine - The Film Verdict

John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell play CIA hit men sharing a poignant farewell mission in ‘Wild Horse Nine’, the latest knockout black comedy from ‘In Bruges’ and ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ writer-director Martin McDonagh.

If some of these narrative details sound familiar, McDonagh covered strikingly similar terrain in his previous films, notably In Bruges, which also featured two bickering hit men hiding away in a sleepy tourist town, ruminating on past crimes as they await their bloody destiny. Both screenplays even have running jokes about dwarves, which appear to be a recurring obsession for the writer-director. In fairness, McDonagh is not hiding the parallels, describing Wild Horse Nine in press interviews as a cross between In Bruges and The Banshees of Inisherin. There are also distant echoes here of the Coen brothers comedy Burn After Reading (2008), which starred Malkovich as a disgruntled CIA whistleblower.

‘Wild Horse Nine’ review: John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell command Martin McDonagh’s potent 1970s character study

The director’s Easter Island-set fifth feature premieres in Venice competition and looks set for awards attention

It’s 1973, and US CIA agents are working undercover in the Chilean capital of Santiago to destabilise the country following the election of socialist prime minister Salvador Allende. It’s a juicy premise for a real-life period thriller – except writer/director Martin McDonagh is far more interested in the personal than the political, and Wild Horse Nine is richer for it. That volatile era proves a resonant backdrop for this character study of two men facing a personal reckoning and, alongside electric performances from John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell, the film benefits from McDonagh’s expert blend of poignant drama and blistering dark comedy.

‘Wild Horse Nine’ Review: John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell Make a Perfect Pair in Martin McDonagh’s Poignant, Blood-Dipped Buddy Comedy

Steve Buscemi also stars in this story of two CIA operatives who take a trip to Easter Island while readying for the Chilean military coup that would overthrow the Salvador Allende government.

Start with the wry humor of In Bruges’ fractious hitmen, out of their natural element in a picturesque tourist destination, then stir in the melancholic island setting of The Banshees of Inisherin, a haunted place of solitude and self-reflection. That lands you in the territory of Martin McDonagh’s shape-shifting tragicomedy Wild Horse Nine. But the longing for peaceful deliverance and perhaps even atonement that ripples through the writer-director’s fifth feature makes it uniquely affecting, resonating in ways both personal and political.

Wild Horse Nine review: John Malkovich is Oscar-worthy in this untameable beast of a movie

The latest from In Bruges and Banshees of Inisherin director Martin McDonagh is a poignant and powerful film that blends the personal and the political.

4/5

Fear not, though; McDonagh is far from spinning his wheels, delivering a poignant, powerful film that skilfully blends the personal and the political. The year is 1973, and Rockwell’s Lee and Malkovich’s Chris are in Santiago, Chile. “We came down here to destabilise your democracy,” the outlandish veteran Chris tells two disbelieving girls at the airport, said in such a jokey way they can’t take him seriously. But underneath the dark humour lies the bleak truth.

A melancholy hangout drama masquerading as a hit-man comedy, Martin McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine plays at times like a more contemplative remake of the director’s classic In Bruges. Once again, we have two mismatched assassins traveling to a foreign land as they’re egged on by their foulmouthed, lunatic boss. Once again, we discover that our protagonists have ulterior, more existential motives. Once again, the past intrudes, loyalty is divided, and irreverent one-liners are delivered. But Wild Horse Nine has been built around the queasy charisma of the great John Malkovich, who has made a career out of blending fragility and menace, even in his smallest parts. The more vulnerable a Malkovich character is, the more dangerous and unknowable. Wild Horse Nine gives him the role of his career.

Malkovich tu vence
