I hope this message finds you well. My name is [Seu Nome], and I am a long-time follower and supporter of artistic gymnastics. I am writing with respect and admiration for the continued efforts of the FIG to ensure fairness, safety, and technical excellence in the sport.
I would like to bring attention to the execution of the Cheng vault, specifically in cases where athletes contact the vaulting table with only their fingers or with insufficient hand placement, relying primarily on the springboard to generate the necessary block. This concerns the gymnasts who perform what is commonly referred to as a “one-hand Cheng”.
This technique may present two important issues:
- Safety risks – Insufficient or superficial hand support may lead to instability and increases the potential for wrist, elbow, and shoulder injuries.
- Technical fairness – When the push-off is primarily generated from the springboard and not the vault table, the skill does not reflect the same biomechanical demands as a correctly executed Cheng with a complete and substantial hand block on the table.
Given the increasing visibility of this technique in international competitions, including performances by Leanne Wong, I would like to respectfully suggest that the FIG consider:
- Clarifying the required minimum surface contact of the hand with the vault table, in technical terms.
- Specifying deductions for vaults where the support phase is minimal or not used to properly generate block.
- Reinforcing judging guidelines to ensure consistent penalty application across competitions.
Such clarifications would not only promote fairness in scoring but also help maintain the traditional biomechanical integrity and safety standards of the vault.
