But this is the first time she’s made noise with new material in a while. “Type Dangerous,” which dropped on June 6, has had some traction, and promo hitter Lionel Ridenour is absolutely crushing with the song at multiple radio formats. A video is due to drop shortly. Will she and her team be able to parlay this into a proper hit? History has shown that it doesn’t pay to underestimate her.
L.A. Reid, who is executive-producing the star’s new project, deserves major props for his role in Carey’s career. He signed her to three labels, Island Def Jam, Epic and now gamma., and exec-produced the smash IDJ set The Emancipation of Mimi, which earned eight Grammy noms and is now at 7.7m ATD.
Carey’s 1995 album Daydream is at 9.3m ATD and 1993’s Music Box is at nearly 8m. Single “We Belong Together” is at 8.6m+, while “Fantasy,” “Touch My Body” and “Obsessed” are all hovering around 6m ATD.
The singer’s world trek, meanwhile, includes the Summertime Ball at London’s Wembley Stadium, the Festival at Autodromo de Interlagos in Brazil, four dates in Australia and a jaunt in Asia. The star’s Vegas residency (hailing the 20-year anniversary of Mimi) wrapped in February. Her regular holiday tour brings in major box-office sugarplums. In the last quarter century, according to Pollstar, she’s moved 1.4m tix and grossed more than $131m.
