Michael Jackson was heavily influenced by his sister Janet’s iconic 1989 album Rhythm Nation 1814. He loved the project so much that he tried to hire producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for his Dangerous album, and famously used samples and military-style dance breaks from her work in his own tours.

Michael was mesmerized by the hard-edged “New Jack Swing” percussion and the socially conscious, storytelling approach of Rhythm Nation. During the recording of his Dangerous album in 1991, Michael would regularly reference Janet’s album to his producers, wanting to achieve that same harder, more contemporary sound. [1, 2, 3]

Michael was such a fan of tracks like “The Knowledge” that he incorporated quotes and elements of Janet’s work directly into his own live shows. For example, during his Dangerous World Tour and HIStory World Tour, he used Janet’s signature vocal quips and musical segues during the megamix interludes. [1, 2]
